The city was founded in 1854 by two Irishmen, Dennis J. Oliver and D. S. Gregory.
The town was originally named after Menlo Park, a country estate in Ireland owned by Gregory's father. In 1863, the San Francisco & San Jose Railroad built a station in the area, which helped to spur growth. The city was incorporated in 1874.
